live in washington. only one day to go before mitt romney faces off against president obama in denver and our new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows voters across the nation are placing more importance on these debates than the last time a sitting president ran and was challenged. joining me chris cizilla, managing editor of post politics.com and nbc political editor mark murray. mark, first to you, go through the numbers on the new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll. others have shown tightening of the race. when you asked voters whether they are looking to these debates more than last time did. >> people are paying attention. four in ten saying this is going to matter, be important to their vote, although worth noting about six in ten of the people said this wasn't going to be all that important. when you dig inside the numbers it shows that key parts of president obama's coalition african-americans, latinos, are actually putting a high importance on the debates which actually kind of shows the challenge that mitt romney has to actually get his side as enthusiastic about it.

romney will have the chance to answer questions that they themselves have been somewhat reluctant to answer. we're going to run through some of the big ones keeping them honest. first, we have late polling. new cnn numbers that show the race tightening. president obama still leads 50% to 47%. the three-point gap is within the poll's margin of error. mr. obama got a four-point bounce to put him in the lead. the president's favorable rating meantime remains above the crucial 50% mark at 52%. mr. romney is close but still in negative territory at 49%. he enjoys an edge on handling the deficit and joblessness, but trails on virtually every other big issue, including medicare, taxes and foreign policy. keeping them honest, when it comes to some of those issues, both candidates have come up short either on specifics or credibility. issues like cutting taxes without ballooning the deficit or burdening the middle class. the romney campaign has been asked again and again for specifics. here's runningmate paul ryan just yesterday on fox news. >> there's been a traditional democrat and repub

airings are coming from pro-romney sponsor coming from outside interest groups. next slide. if we just look at title i c. fours, and it will be much more today about disclosure, if we just look at 501(c)(4)'s, over half of the interest group ads are coming from those groups. that give you a sense of the magnitude and you were looking just at the general election period actually slightly after that, after the last time frame, april 26 through september 8. this is a list of the top spenders on the republican side. we'll have more to say next week about ad specifically where there's been, what you're spending on and what they are saying. next slide. the other thing that we're seeing this cycle, every year as it would always likes to say that this is the most negative election ever. we are using more cautious about that, in fact some of the early releases that we did in 20 is a hold on, it is exactly the same at the end of 2010 we saw an increase and 2010 was more negative than any other cycle we have tracked back to 2000. in 2012, we're also seeing continuing to see that increase in negat

. and let me explain why. i think the president's going to win but let's assume governor romney won. if he wins, that almost certainly means the republicans will hold on to the house and it will be about 50/50 in the senate, more or less the way it is now. you can't filibuster a budget. it's the only thing that doesn't require 60 votes in the senate to pass o as opposed to 51. so a lot of the policymaking will be pushed into the budget and he'll just have to pick up one or two people on that. if you assume that he is going to do what he said he's going to do, i think a lot of his priorities will be enacted. and i think it will be bad on the budget side, as i said. including for medicare t will drive the medicare trust fund out-- dry up the money by 2016. if what i think is going to happen happens and president obama wins, i think that too will break the logjam for a different reason. as senator mcconnell says their number one goal for the last four years has been denying him a second term. as soon as he gets that, they can't deny him a third term. he can't have one anyway. so i think you w
